The Cost Of Learning To Fly

Top  Previous  Next

Learning to fly is an investment.

If you are aiming for a professional aviation career, it is an investment in your future career and prospects.
If you are learning to fly for recreation or as a personal challenge, it is an investment in your personal development and enjoyment.

Yes, it is expensive, but then so is all education these days. A university degree will cost many tens of thousands of dollars, even hundreds of thousands if you are a full fee paying student.

Our club attempts to keep rates for aircraft hire as low as we can. Many club members offer their time in administration and operations for no return in order to help keep costs to a minimum. For this reason, we have two rating scales, one for club members and a higher scale for non club members. We encourage you to join the club if you wish to gain a licence because it will save you some money.

Note: Charges may be altered at any time and are adjusted each month to take into account variations in fuel prices and other factors that may affect operational costs. The total prices quoted here for a complete course are approximate only.

Hourly charges for aircraft hire are not specified here. They change from month to month according to fuels prices.

Total costs for a licence

These will vary of course depending on how long it takes you to reach the required standard and which aircraft you use.

Note: RAA training is not currently available until we obtain a replacement aircraft for our damaged Sportcruiser.

When it becomes available again, we recommend that you initially train in our RAA aircraft because this will give a considerable saving in your costs. Conducting your initial training (up to around 20 to 30 hours) will be a significant saving compared to doing all your training in a GA aircraft.

Once you have your RAA certificate, you may wish to proceed further and obtain your full GA licence.

You can, if you wish, elect to commence training in a GA aircraft from the start, but this will be a little more costly.

Initially, most flying in GA aircraft will be done in VH-KSR which is the cheapest GA aircraft for you to fly. You may elect to fly in VH-KOT if you wish. VH-KOT is a much newer aircraft, is a little heavier, flies a little faster and has a fuel injected engine. Once you get to the stage of doing cross country flying you may wish to use KOT.

VH-PIX is more often used by PPL pilots because it is more powerful, a bit faster than KSR, and can carry a greater load which makes it more economic than the other aircraft point to point on a longer flight.  If other aircraft are unavailable for initial  training, you may still do training flights in PIX.

The hours tabled below are minimum requirements. It is unusual for anyone to get through in minimum time. The actual time you take may vary considerably depending upon:

How often and regularly you fly
Your age
Your intrinsic natural ability

The more often you fly, the quicker you will learn and the less you will have to repeat particular sections of your training. Older people do generally take longer than younger people, but this is not a hard and fast rule. Natural ability does play a part, but is not so significant as you might think. The motor skills required for flight can be achieved by almost anybody with practice. The main discriminating factor in "natural ability" is in fact your ability to absorb information and to learn to make the critical judgements required for safe flying.

These figures must be taken as approximations only and are subject to variation without notice. Actual costs will vary from individual to individual and could be greater than tabled below if you take longer than the minimum time specified.  The major factor affecting future increases in charges is fuel costs over which we have no control. These figures assume you have joined the club as a student member and take about the average time to complete your training.

Ancillary costs include things like medicals, ASIC card,  flight theory books, theory briefings, test flight charges and optional theory classes

The club does not at the moment undertake instructor for GA. However, this may be available shortly.

Instrument Flight Training

Please get in touch if you would like to do an instructor or instrument flight rating. This can be arranged.
