General Aviation Training

Top  Previous  Next

There are several different levels of pilot licenses ranging from the General Flight Progress Test (GFPT) and Private Pilots License (PPL) through to the Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL).

First Lesson to Solo

This section includes basics of aircraft handling, introduction to aerodynamics, effects of controls, radio communications and circuit training.

Usually, after between 10 to 15 hours of dual flight training the instructor will send the student solo in the circuit area.

(NOTE: The time taken to solo may be more than this if you do not meet the required standard for safe flight within that time.

After having completed a Basic Aeronautical Knowledge test the Student will then complete the second section.

Solo to GFPT

This section includes specific solo flight training as well as more intensive training in cross wind landings, simulated engine failures, stalls, advanced turning and other flight sequences.

This may be after about 25 hours of training. Some people may complete it in a bit less time and others may take longer. If you are an older person, you may find that it takes a little longer.

When you have reached a satisfactory standard you will  undertake a flight test with the Chief Flying Instructor. Upon successful completion of the flight test you will be granted "passenger carrying" approval.

GFPT to PPL

This section includes a minimum of twenty hours and involves navigation and cross-country flying which includes a series of navigation exercises throughout Tasmania and, if desired, the mainland.

Included in these exercises will be at least two solo navigation flights. On completion of the PPL theory exam and subsequent flight test you will achieve a full Private Pilots Licence.
